Working at AR by John Hayes
Tell us about yourself?
Originally, I’m from Sheffield but more recently we moved to Chesterfield to be closer to family and work. I love spending time with my family, but when I can, you’ll find me out on my mountain bike!
Tell us about your career.
I started by working as a joiner and I did this for about 3 years before making the decision to change my career path. I worked in groundworks for a number of years which I enjoyed. However, I have always had an interest in demolition; as a child I would visit my dad at work and he would show me the demolition machine he worked with (when it wasn’t in operation!). My dad suggested I get my machine ticket, and this is when I started in demolition for a company in Rotherham. My dad and I joined AR on the same day, nearly 9 years ago.
Tell us more about your role at AR.
Since joining AR as a demolition operative, I have received further training and gained my D90, high reach and all high reach tickets so I am able to work on a variety of projects and deliver the most effective, safe work for our clients. Today, I work as demolition plant operator and I use our KMC600 machine.
What is the best part of your job?
Working at AR and being treated really well. AR make a huge effort and investment in their staff and equipment which makes a real difference.
What is the most demanding aspect of your role?
Ensuring I keep everyone safe, at all times, is the most important part of my role and one I really enjoy.
What are the highlights over the past few years?
I really enjoyed working on the Dairy Crest project in Telford with great people and a job well done. I also enjoyed our work on the Broadmarsh car park in Nottingham.
