Project Description:
AR Demolition Ltd was awarded the contract to demolish this large warehouse structure following significant fire damage. The structure was of a steel frame construction with a large asbestos cement roof. The fire damage had obliterated all contents and structural components rendering the structure unsafe for access, whilst also presenting an asbestos risk from the burnt out cement roof.
Key Challenges:
With no means of safe access, works were undertaken largely using the ‘wet & drop’ technique involving the use of dust suppression & the mechanical demolition of the structure and the asbestos cement roof. Due to the lack of accurate asbestos information works were also undertaken as licensed asbestos works and a licensed asbestos supervisor on site at all times. A robust risk assessment and surveying strategy was put in place to continually identify and review the potential asbestos risks within the structure.
Key Health and Safety Risks:
- Risk of Asbestos Fiber Release
- Uncontrolled Collapse
- Falling Debris
- Separation to party wall/adjacent structures
- Access to the structure
- Dust, Noise & Vibration
- Fire/explosion (Inc. gas canisters etc.)
